not believe -- you can say the same thing for the obama white house -- they think america's undertaxed and the tax rates can go dramatically higher despite these examples in europe without it hurting economic growth. i think they are completely wrong. i think you can draw just the opposite conclusion of what's going on in europe. but apparently we're going down that route anyway. >> isn't that why president obama wants to raise the tax rate? he raises the tax rate in order to spend. seems to me that taxing and spending is his mantra, just like the east european mantra and the california and new york -- why would you want to raise the tax rate $1.6 trillion if youp didn didn't want to spe? that's a big number. >> it is. jared bernstein was in "the new york times" complaining about the tax cutting in this country over the past 30 years. and jared says, we've gutted the tax code, we're just not getting enough revenue for all the spending we want. >> i would gut the tax code of all its special deductions and loopholes and whatnot and take the rate down to about 15%. i am a flat tax guy. wh

're at the president obama white house almost every week meeting with president obama. and i understand that he wants them to help him get his general accomplished. i understand that. what about the other direction? the fact that they're getting all this face time with the president. does that mean they're getting their agenda, too? well, you can judge for yourself in small ways. we're told that a senator elizabeth warren of massachusetts is about to get a seat on the senate banking committee. it's not official yet but one aide says it is, quote, likely. this of course has the banking world, the financial industry in a tissy. this is not what they wanted. they did not want a new sheriff on wall street. one democratic aide describing them as, quote, going nuts over this. but going nuts does not necessarily mean you get what you want. especially not when the horse you bet on so boldly lost so badly. it also means that working goat some things doesn't mean you have to work together on everything. and it also means that elections have consequences. now it's time for "the last word" with lawrence o'donnel

at the pentagon is former republican senator chuck hagel who met with president obama at the white house this week. as for hillary clinton's position at the state department, the national journal reports that president obama is, quote, genuinely conflicted over whether to pick kerry or united nations ambassador susan rice. president obama said yesterday that republican attacks against susan rice will not influence his decision. jo ari, what do you make of the chuck hagel situation with his name floating into the mix now? >> i thinkç it's a good faith efforts to take in a wide range of views. we know that president obama in his first term, obviously, went with secretary gates despite his ties to republican foreign policy. hagel is more of a progressive voice, but i'm not sure that a second-term obama presidency reaches back to another republican defense figure. >> and as to the john kerry/susan rice dilemma that the president faces, he says that the attacks on susan rice won't affect his decision one way or another. it won't force his hand to nominate her, and it won't affect his decision to go w

on this issue of taxes. the white house saying president obama is saying rates should go up on those making $250,000 or more. these are two starting proposals. the white house has put their proposal out last week. it really drew a hard line, calls for $1.6 trillion in new tax revenue, most of that coming from increasing taxes on wealthier americans, but this republican plan very different, does not call for increasing taxes on wealthier americans. president also wants to end congressional oversight of the debt limit. there's no such offer in the republican plan. in fact, some aides have told me that that is a pipe dream. so these two sides still very far apart. now, tonight, martin, the white house will be inviting members of congress here for the holiday party. house speaker john boehner will be here as well. there have been a lot of questions about whether these two will run into each other, whether they will talk about the fiscal cliff. no one is signaling what they might discuss, but house speaker john boehner when asked about tonight's event said that he thinks he might run into the preside

, they insisted the election return obama to the white house and the gop return to the house requires both parties to come together in a fairground. but we know that didn't happen. i think everybody is aware, right, that it is the gerrymandering that has returned -- what they are calling middle ground is not middle ground, right? >> it isn't middle ground and there wasn't a dead locked election. they forget a couple of things number 1 that there was an election, and the people spoke and number two if you look at every survey -- i guess the second point is in this campaign there was a clear, clear outline by the president of where he stood, no secret. there had to be a continuation of the middle class tax cut, and an end of the tax cut for the very wealthy in -- in 2010 they got over 90%, the upper 1% -- 90% over that of the income growth, and the third point, the surveys show after the election all of them -- that if you ask people should there be continuation of the middle class tax cuts? yes. should there be a continuation of the tax cuts for the very wealthy? no.

food samples like we always do when we're there and looked like he enjoyed them. back at the white house president obama welcomed his one time archrival mitt romney for what we can only assume was a more formal lunch. certainly a post election, perhaps post partisan moment. as politico points out this morning, like most washington rituals this get-together was likely more about symbolism than substance. rarely do once fierce rivals become political friends. so why even do it? and are there exceptions to the rules? let's put it through the spin cycle. look, i think because there's going to be no substance in this lunch anyway, i think the symbolism here really is important. i'm still waiting for you to jump in here. but the symbolism is important because, yes, for the american people to show that after a hugely expensive, nasty campaign that these two fellows can come together and sit down and meet with each other. but i think overseas it sends an even more important message. again, hugely expensive. hugely nasty campaign. these two guys come together and yet no one died. no one wen
